Tools and Techniques for Cost Effective Creation of New, Reliable and Efficient Microwave Transistors for Millimetre Wave and Wireless Applications

About this project: Shifting the circuit design paradigm to the requirements of a circuit will provide a low-cost design solution for application with tight size, performance and lifetime constraints. This will enhance the international competitiveness of Mimix Broadband in the microwave wireless, aerospace, and radar markets, which will contribute to Australia's high performance circuit design sector. New knowledge and skilled researchers provided by this project will foster growth of the microwave and wireless industry. The local research community will be advantaged in international reputation and in its efforts to develop future high performance wireless systems.

Project partnerships: This is a linkage project with Mimix Broadband and Macquarie University

Scholarships available: One Australian Postgraduate Award, Industry $26,140 p.a. tax exempt; and one MQRES (currently $20,007 p.a. tax exempt in 2008); both with up to $6,000 top up. Quoted rates are subject to change without notice.

High-Performance Microwave and Millimetre Wave Antennas Based on Multi-layer Periodic Structures Applications

About this project: Conducted in collaboration with CSIRO ICT Centre, this project has been funded by an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant for 2009 to 2011. The candidate will design, simulate and test antennas required for a variety of telecommunication and other applications. These novel antennas will be based on multi-layer two-dimensional or quasi three-dimensional periodic structures. The other participants of this project include a postdoctoral fellow, a chief investigator and a partner investigator from CSIRO.

Project partnerships: CSIRO ICT Centre and Macquarie University

Scholarships available: One MQRES currently $20,007 p.a. tax exempt in 2008. Quoted rates are subject to change without notice.

Integrated Circuit Design Flow Radio Frequency CAD and Circuit Simulation Applications

About this project: Simulation and modelling of distributed circuits and systems with memory provide interesting and challenging problems. This project will look at the issues with modelling slow rate phenomena in microwave frequency circuits. The applications range from single transistor to complete base-station power amplifiers. Electromagnetic, layout, and thermal aspects are important factors. There is scope for the results to contribute directly to commercial products.

Project partnerships: AWR Inc, Win Semiconductor and Macquarie University

Scholarships available: Two Centres of Research Excellence Scholarships, currently $20,007 p.a. tax exempt in 2008. Quoted rates are subject to change without notice.

Collaborative Communications Schemes for Wireless Sensor Networks in Harsh Environments Applications

About this project: The candidate will design, simulate and test novel medium access control and networking schemes required to support virtual MIMO operation in next generation wireless sensor networks. These cross-layer schemes will be required to provide highly reliable and energy efficient performance in wireless sensor networks deployed in harsh radio conditions, such as encountered in industrial control environments.

Scholarships available: One MQRES currently $20,007 p.a. tax exempt in 2008. Quoted rates are subject to change without notice.

Broadband Wireless Medium Access Scheduling for Quality of Service Support Applications

About this project: The candidate will design, simulate and test novel medium access control Quality of Service scheduling algorithms required to support rich multimedia applications in emerging broadband wireless networks (3G, WiMAX, LTE). The scheduling algorithms will need to support guaranteed Quality of Service for individual users while providing high network efficiency and operating in challenging mobile environments. The scheduling algorithms will need to be highly responsive to the changing radio channel conditions while being simple enough for real-time implementation in mobile network elements.

Scholarships available: One MQRES currently $20,007 p.a. tax exempt in 2008. Quoted rates are subject to change without notice.
