Meet our Academic Staff


Karu Esselle

Professor Karu Esselle is the Director of Postgraduate Research in the Division of ICS, and the Director of the Centre for Electromagnetic and Antenna Engineering (CELANE). He is a member of ICS Division Executive. Since 2002, Karu was involved with research grants and contracts worth over three million dollars, and his research team members attracted further grants worth about a million dollars. Karu has co-authored over 150 papers, including five invited book chapters, and has given many invited lectures around the world. Karu serves as a research grant assessor to several organizations including the Australian Research Council, Hong-Kong University Grants Commission and the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (Dutch research council). He led the establishment of AusAMF, a national collaborative antenna testing facility funded by the Australian Research Council, and he is currently directing this facility as the Chair of the Board of Management. His industry experience includes full-time employment as a Faculty Hire Design Expert by the Hewlett Packard Laboratory, Palo Alto, USA, and several consultancies for local and international companies including Cisco Systems (USA) and Locata Corporation. His recent awards include the 2004 Macquarie University Inaugural Innovation Award for best invention disclose. Karu has also served in technical program committees or international committees for many international conferences including IEEE AP-S Int. Symp., IEEE Vehicular Technology Int. Symp., EUROEM, APMC, PIERS, AMEREM, IASTED ARP, AusWireless and DSPCS. He is the former Chair of the IEEE New South Wales MTT/AP Joint Chapter from 1999 to 2002. At present he is the Chair of the Educational Activities Committee of the IEEE NSW Section, and a member of the IEEE NSW Executive Committee. Karu initiated the formation of the IEEE Student Brach at Macquarie University and he serves as the Branch Counselor at present. Keith Imrie

Dr Keith Imrie graduated BSc(Hons) from the University of New England (Armidale) in 1958, and PhD in 1962, working on a novel high-power transmitter (with assistance from an ICIANZ Research Fellowship). He then spent 1962-1964 at the Nuffield Radio Astronomy Laboratories, Jodrell Bank, in a radar-astronomy group (with assistance from a Rutherford Memorial Scholarship of the Royal Society). For 1965-1971 he became a Lecturer / Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney, and developed equipment for teaching and the Fleurs Field Station. From 1972-2005 he was a Senior Lecturer at Macquarie University, developing material for a wide range of Electronics teaching. In 2006 he ceased teaching, retaining a part-time position with various administrative duties.

 


Eryk Dutkiewicz

Professor Eryk Dutkiewicz began his research career at the Overseas Telecommunications Corporation (OTC) Labs in Sydney in 1988 in the area of Asynchronous Transfer Mode systems. In 1990's, while at OTC/Telstra and at University of Wollongong he conducted R&D into quality of service mechanisms for wired, wireless and mobile technologies. In 1999, he joined Motorola where he managed wireless research activities in Motorola Labs in Sydney. During that period he was also deeply involved in IEEE wireless standards activities. In 2004, he rejoined University of Wollongong as a Professorial Fellow to lead a wireless research activity. His recent work has been in the areas of broadband wireless networks and wireless sensor networks focusing on scheduling and protocol aspects. This work has been supported by industry partners, including Motorola Inc., Freescale Semiconductor Inc. and Agere Systems. Prof. Dutkiewicz has strong collaboration links within wireless industry and with premier research institutions in Asia. He also holds visiting appointments at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing and at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Prof. Dutkiewicz joined the Department of Electronic Engineering at Macquarie University, Sydney in 2008 as a Professor of Wireless Communications. He is a member of Macquarie University's Centre of Microwave and Wireless Applications.


 

Anthony Parker

Professor Anthony Parker started work with VHF radio and microwave systems, and satellite earth-station installations. In 1986, he began research in design techniques and circuit models for gallium arsenide microwave technology at The University of Sydney. This was in collaboration with the Division of Radiophysics of Australia's Commonwealth Scientific' and Industrial Research Organization.

He joined Macquarie University, Sydney in 1990. He has a continuing project on pulsed characterization of microwave devices and design of low distortion communications circuits. He has consulted with several companies including M/A-COM, MA and Agilent Technologies, CA. He has developed accurate circuit simulation techniques, such as used in FET and HEMT models. His recent work has been in the area of intermodulation in broadband circuits and systems, including a major project with Mimix Broadband, Inc.

Professor Parker has authored or co-authored over 120 publications. He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a member of the Institution of Telecommunications and Electronic Engineers, Australia and a committee member of the IEEE AP/MTT NSW Local Chapter. He directs the Collaborative Nonlinear Electronics Research Facility at Macquarie University.


Graham Town - Current Head of Department

I am an academic electrical engineer with 8 years experience in the Australian electronics industry and over 17 years experience in tertiary education and research. I was responsible for setting up Macquarie University's first engineering program, and am currently the BE Program Director. My experience is diverse, and includes work on microwave and antenna systems for telecommunications and avionics, construction of an NMR imaging system, medical imaging, and more than ten years experience in fibre optics and photonics research for applications in telecommunications and sensing. I lead the Guided Wave Optics and Photonics Research group, a member of the Macquarie University Centre for Lasers and Applications, and part of the University's Centre of Research Excellence in Lasers and Photonics. Current research is in the areas of polymer guided-wave optics and broadband optical fibre sources (e.g. continuum generation, multiwavelength lasers) and their applications.

 


Rein Vesilo

Dr Rein Vesilo was awarded his PhD from the University of Sydney in 1990 and obtained his B. Engineering from the University of NSW. He started work at Macquarie University in 1990 and is currently a senior lecturer in the Department of Electronics. His research interests are in network performance modelling, queueing theory and applied probability. His primary research collaborators are at the Australian National University and Carnegie Mellon University. Besides teaching in the Department of Electronics he has also taught in the Macquarie Graduate School of Management. He is the representative of the Division of ICS on the University Coursework Studies Committee. He is a member of the IEEE and INFORMS.

 


David Wong

Associate Professor David Wong has the degrees BSc, BE (Hons1), MEngSc and PhD from the University of Sydney. He is presently a Life Member of IEEE, and was previously a Fellow of I.E.Aust.
He is currently a part-time Associate Professor in the Electronics Department of Macquarie University and an Honorary Associate Professor in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering of the University of Sydney. He had been on the academic staff of the University of Sydney from 1959 to 1999. During this time, he held positions with Leeds and Northrup Co (Pennsylvania USA) and the Imperial College of Science & Technology (London UK). Before joining the University of Sydney, he was an engineer with the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority and contributed to the design, construction, commissioning and maintenance of the SNOCOM computer.
