Have you thought about engineering?

Engineering is the application of technology for the benefit of society. The word "engineer" is derived from the latin word for "ingenious", meaning a talent for invention or construction, so whilst it includes people who design and maintain your car engine, it actually encompasses an incredibly wide range of people and activities. Engineers are everywhere, but often invisible; they were involved in design and construction of the roads we drive on, the electricity generation and transmission systems that we all depend on, the artificial limbs and organs that can enhance and prolong quality of life, the computers and software used by almost everyone every day in one way or another, the factories and processes for transforming raw materials into more usable forms, the mobile phones and telecommunications system that have made the world seem a much smaller place, the water storage and drainage systems that make densely populated cities viable, etc. When things work well and reliably at an affordable cost, an engineer somewhere is smiling.

Whilst engineers can do a great deal, they can't do everything, so there are a variety of specializations of engineering - the most common specializations are in civil, chemical, electrical, and mechanical engineering. Even within these specializations there are sub-specialisations. For example, telecommunications engineering is a broad specialization of electrical engineering, covering everything except power engineering. All engineers are trained in the basic sciences (maths, computing, physics) however engineering involves more than applied science - it's a way of doing things which involves developing creative and practical solutions to problems in diverse teams of people. Engineers are also often responsible for management of large projects, and many become successful business people.

Employment prospects for engineers are very good. There has been an undersupply of engineers in Australia for a while now, and starting salaries are relatively high. Engineers are employed in a wide range of industries, and readily move around, so it's a good career for both men and women. Engineering is also a relatively portable qualification; an accredited engineering degree is recognized in North America and in parts of Asia and Europe.

If you've ever wondered how things work or whether they could be made to work better, would like a career with many options, and are interested in making a practical contribution to society, then think about engineering.
