PhD Postgraduate Scholarships

(APAI - Mimix Broadband Inc. : Overcoming Transistor Performance Issues for Emerging Millimetre-Wave Applications

Two Australian Postgraduate Award Industry scholarships are currently available at Macquarie University. Mimix Broadband and Macquarie University have successfully gained funding under the ARC Linkage Program to support a research program on Overcoming Transistor Performance Issues for Emerging Millimetre-Wave Applications.

The projects will investigate the operation of transistors for emerging millimetre-wave applications, such as point-to-point communications and automotive radar. The aim is the development of circuit design methodologies that extract better performance from a given fabrication process. The two avenues of research are large-signal power applications at 40GHz and highly linear receiver applications. The projects will involve interaction with software developers abroad and presentation of results at international forums. The successful applicants will conduct their research in Macquarie's Electronics Collaborative Nonlinear Research Facility and at Mimix's Sydney design centre.

We are seeking high calibre, suitably qualified Telecommunications or Engineering graduates with at least upper second-class honours, or equivalent qualifications. Early career professionals interested in returning to higher degree studies are particularly encouraged to apply.

The monetary assistance available to the successful APAI applicants is equivalent to a $36,480 to $46,000 taxable gross income. This assistance is comprised of: a tax-free stipend of $24,388 per annum, plus other provisions (a $5,000 tax-free top up, and income from casual laboratory demonstration and tutoring). It is tenured for 3 years full time subject to satisfactory progress. The award is available to Australian citizens and permanent residents, and New Zealand citizens.

Information on other international scholarships is available upon request.

PhD Postgraduate Scholarships

(Postgraduate: PhD Research Scholarship)

A full-time PhD research scholarship is available in the Department of Electronics Macquarie University. This ARC funded project will investigate achieving high linearity over broad bands in transistor circuits for communication applications.

This project will deliver techniques for designing transistor circuits with low distortion for broadband microwave and millimetre-wave applications, such as wireless networks, telemetry, and communications. The challenge is achieving wide bandwidths with good distortion performance, so distortion generated by complicated device properties will be researched to deliver methodologies to solve the problem.

This award is available to Australian/New Zealand Citizens or Australian Permanent Residents. Applicants should have completed an Australian four-year undergraduate degree with at least Honours Second Class Division 1 in Electronics or Telecommunication Engineering, or equivalent qualifications. award provides for $29,610 to $38,280 equivalent taxable gross income (including a tax-free base stipend of $18,837 per annum, a $5,000 tax-free top up, and income from casual laboratory demonstration and tutoring) and the tenure is 3 years full time subject to satisfactory progress. Further funding may be available within the Division for research costs.

Contact Prof Anthony Parker, (02) 98509131, tonyp @ ics.mq.edu.au, www.elec.mq.edu.au/cnerf for further information. Application forms are available from the Higher Degree Research Unit: (02) 98507277, pgschol @ mq.edu.au, or www.ro.mq.edu.au/hdru/scholar.htm.

Applications close on 30th July 2005.

Research Fellow (Microwave Electronics)

(Two part-time or One full-time position (fixed-term)) (Past-time/Full-time (fixed-term))
Ref. 20201

Two part-time positions which can be combined to a full-time position, are available to work on ARC supported projects on microwave transistor technology at Macquarie University. One position is two days/week on overcoming transistor performance issues for emerging millimetre-wave applications. This project is in collaboration with Mimix Broadband, Inc. This project is on the extracting the best possible linearity and power output from the fabrication process. The second position is three days/week on achieving high linearity over broad bands in transistor circuits for communication applications. The challenge is achieving wide bandwidths with good distortion performance.

Essential Selection Criteria: PhD (or submitted) in Electronic Engineering or cognate area or equivalent; strong background in an area related to microwave transistor modelling or circuit design; familiarity with design tools and measurement equipment; ability to present research results at scientific meetings and to publish in the scientific literature; good written and interpersonal communication skills.

The positions are available for a period of three years and may be subject to probationary conditions. Appointees will be given the opportunity to assist with teaching within the department. Applicants should indicate for which position they are applying or whether they wish to be considered for both.

Applicants MUST obtain an information package, available from Professor Anthony Parker on (02) 9850 9148 or tonyp @ ics.mq.edu.au or http://www.ics.mq.edu.au/jobs

Selection criteria must be addressed in the application. Further information can be obtained from www.ics.mq.edu.au/jobs or Prof Anthony Parker on (02) 9850 9148 or tonyp @ ics.mq.edu.au or www.elec.mq.edu.au/cnerf.

Package: up to $68,339 pa, including base salary $42,695 to $57,747 pa, up to 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading. An appointee with a PhD will be appointed to a minimum of Point 6 on the salary scale, currently $53,834 pa.

The successful applicant will be offered the choice of an Australian Workplace Agreement for this appointment.

Applications, including full curriculum vitae, quoting the reference number, visa status, and the names and addresses (including postal and/or e-mail, telephone and fax numbers) of three referees should be forwarded to the Recruitment Manager, Human Resources, Macquarie University, NSW 2109 by 17 June 2005. Applications will not be acknowledged unless specifically requested.

The selection criteria of the position must be addressed in your application. These positions are available to Australian residents, those who hold valid working visas or permits, or overseas applicants for senior positions.
